A band-saw blade is a continuous loop of metal. Because the thrust of the blade is always downwards there is no risk of kickback. It can be used to cut curves and will cut thicker wood than the average circular saw. A fret saw uses an up and down motion, and with it's thin blade can be used for very accurate cutting of intricate shapes.
